Computing

The infrared and x-ray astronomy groups share the common "iras" network.  Spread over several offices and labs there are:

  • 5 main servers
  • 5 Pentium IV workstations
  • 4 Laser Printers
  • 1 Color printer
  • 2 Color Scanners

User files are stored on a main file server with a total storage space of 500 GB.  Our PCs operate Windows XP, and Fedora Linux. Under Windows, users can log in via Starnet's X-Win32 xterm emulator which allows the PC to act as an X-terminal. Under Linux, users may use X directly and access much of the software that is on the workstations directly from the PCs.

Some of the software that is installed and used at our site includes:

  • IRAF (Image Reduction and Analysis Facility) is used to analyze astronomical data
  • FTOOLS
  • MIDAS(Munich Image and Data Analysis System) is the European equivalent of IRAF
  • DRAO software
  • PROS
  • DISSPLA
  • AIPS
  • Visual Studio
  • Adobe Photoshop
